The Basics

Bastrop State Park sits at the edge of the Lost Pines — a 13-mile stretch of loblolly pine forest unlike anything else in Central Texas. The park was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, and the stone and wood structures they built are still standing and still beautiful.

Entry fee: $5/adult, free under 12. Hours: 6 AM - 10 PM daily. Address: 100 Park Road 1A, Bastrop, TX 78602.

After the Fire

The 2011 Bastrop County Complex fire burned 34,000 acres and destroyed 96% of the park's old-growth pines. But the forest is regenerating. Young pines are 15+ feet tall now. The park tells a story of destruction and resilience that makes visiting even more meaningful.
